Data Governance

Induction and Training
  • Induct agency leadership on data governance: the purpose, benefits, roles, and organizational commitment required

  • Develop a data governance program structure and representation that aligns with the agency's capacity and culture

  • Program area data stewards training: Establish the data governance committee mission and define the data steward’s role and key responsibilities

  • Data governance coordinator induction and training: Develop a data governance implementation plan with detailed tasks and timeline for establishing or maturing the data governance program

Data Policies and Processes
  • Assess current state of organization-wide data policies and processes

  • Develop plan for sequence of data policies and processes to be created or revamped based on organization need

  • Create implementation process for new and revamped policies and processes including communications, staff training, and monitoring, and enforcement

Data Quality
  • Develop and maintain a critical data issues process to identify, prioritize, and address barriers to data quality and use

  • Establish work groups of data stewards to resolve data quality issues that cross program areas

  • Identify redundant data collections and creating a plan to phase out the redundant collections

  • Develop a training and support approach to ensure data providers have the capacity to effectively contribute to data collection, validation, and reporting

 

Documentation
  • Develop a data governance policy that formally establishes the program

  • Develop a data governance manual the details how the data governance policy is put into practice

  • Develop data policy and process documentation for each stage in the information life cycle

  • Create a data collection calendar that details all major collections

  • Create standard documentation of high-stakes data reporting processes
